What are CASE exams?

We offer a series of CASE exams in English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Theology, Philosophy and Religion, French and Latin.

The questions are based on our CE at 13+ specifications. Pupils sitting CASE exams are entered by the senior schools they have applied to, who choose which papers pupils will sit and also mark the papers. Pupils will usually sit the exam at the senior school.

Which senior schools use CASE exams?

To see a list of the senior schools which use CASE at 13+ for all of part of their entry procedure visit, iseb.co.uk/assessments/common-entrance/case-information-for-schools/

What papers do the CASE exams include?

We offer a series of CASE) assessments in English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Theology, Philosophy and Religion, French and Latin.

How do schools order CASE past papers?

Schools can now order past papers for CE and CASE) exams through our new online shop.

To access school-only products including individual print-on-demand papers and digital bundles of PDF papers, schools will need a verified ISEB School account for the online shop. Your school may already have an account - if you are unsure, please contact us via the Shop Support Portal.

When do pupils take CASE exams?

There are two CASE sessions each year, in February and May. Full timetables are available on our website, visit iseb.co.uk/assessments/common-entrance/case-information-for-schools/

What are the fees for CASE exams?

ISEB keeps examination fees as low as possible – fees cover the costs of the setting, printing and despatch of papers, and associated administration.

CASE fee for candidates taking the examination in the UK: £140

CASE fee for candidates taking one subject only: £30

Does ISEB accommodate late entries for CASE exams and is there a fee?

ISEB does its best to accommodate late entries for its examinations and assessments. However, the costs involved in processing late registrations are high. Therefore, all late entries are subject to a fee of £50 per school if received after the published closing date.

Changes to individual candidate details (e.g. change of school, subject or level) are likely to incur an administrative fee of £5 per candidate if received after the published closing date.

If changes to individual candidate details result in additional papers being despatched to schools or other sitting centres, courier and packing charges will be added to the standard administration fee.

When should the results be made available to prep schools?

Senior schools are asked to let prep schools know the results of CASE exams as soon as possible, so that decisions can be made about whether a candidate still needs to be entered for the CE exams.

Senior schools are also asked to send to prep school heads an overall report on their candidates’ performance. Prep school heads appreciate general comments on each subject.

Senior schools are also invited to send copies of their reports to the Chief Executive Officer at the ISEB offices, as the Item Authors and Paper Coordinators  always appreciate feedback on how candidates tackled questions in the papers.

How does candidate registration for CASE work?

Schools will register candidates for CE at 11+ and 13+, CASE, iPQ and Exploring the Ancient World (Classics for All) through the Schools Hub on our website.

Schools will need an ISEB School Account to access product specific registration pages on the website and submit candidates.

Many schools will already have an account used to place orders for past CE, and CASE exam papers on our online shop, registrations for CE, CASE and iPQ are completed through this same portal. If your school does not have an account, they will be able to create one through the Qualification & Registration page on our website.

Once logged into your ISEB School Account, navigate to the Schools Hub where you will then have access to registration areas for the different qualifications, CE, CASE, iPQ and Exploring the Ancient World Project Qualification (Classics for All).

Click on the qualification area you require and download the Candidate Registration Upload Template spreadsheets. Populate this spreadsheet with the information for each candidate using the drop-downs to select the appropriate subject and/or level/s. These registration upload spreadsheets mean schools no longer need to enter candidates one-by-one, and can be completed outside of the registration at school's leisure. For detailed guidance on completing this spreadsheet take a look at our solution article; How do schools complete the Candidate Registration Upload Template spreadsheets?

Once this document is completed, save the file as a CSV (Comma delimited) by selecting the option in the drop-down file type.

Navigate back to the Schools Hub and complete the online form detailing your information, school and contact details. You will then be able to upload the CSV file using the ‘Browse’ option. Accept our Terms & Conditions and click submit. The online form should only take a few minutes to complete.

Once submitted, you will see a record of registrations under the ‘Registrations’ section of your ISEB School Account. You can download the submitted files and make changes through this account.

Please note, candidates can not be uploaded through the system if they have not got a marking school selected in the spreadsheet drop down, previously known as 'undecided'. Users are encouraged to upload once all candidates have confirmed their preferred senior school as there is no benefit to uploading sooner. Alternatively, you can either select 'internal marking' or upload an updated spreadsheet at a later date to include these individuals, provided it is within the registration deadline.

We recommend schools coordinate between all staff who may be required to submit candidates as only one spreadsheet can be submitted per school. The system has been designed in a way to disregard any previous uploaded spreadsheets in favour of the most recent upload and as such only one spreadsheet will be recorded for each school, per ISEB School Account.

Why has candidate registration for CASE exams changed?

The aim of these changes is to streamline and improve the registration experience for schools providing one account for customers to order CE and CASE past papers from the online shop and register candidates for CE, CASE and iPQ. In time, we’ll be adding lots more functionality and resources to the Schools Hub and ISEB School Account too.

As these changes are significant and will greatly improve the user experience, we wanted to ensure that they were available for use for the Summer series.

What will schools need to be able to complete candidate registration for CASE exams?

To register candidates for CASE exams you will need:

  • A valid ISEB School Account, log in details and appropriate user rights
  • A completed Candidate Registration Upload Template spreadsheet as a CSV (Comma delimited) file, these spreadsheets are available to download on the registration areas of the Schools Hub.
  • Your details, including name, email, phone number, job title, school name, and reference/purchase order

Schools can access these easy-to-use templates and corresponding forms by logging into their ISEB School Account and navigating to the Examination & Qualification Registration section, found in the Schools Hub, and selecting the correct qualification registration area: CE or CASE.

Please note, the examination registration areas are only accessible to schools logged-in to a verified ISEB School Account. If you are unable to navigate to these areas or can see a padlock, this indicates you are not logged-in and will need to do so before continuing.

Once on the correct examination registration area you can download the Candidate Registration Upload Template spreadsheet. This will open in .Excel on your computer.

Please note, there is a bespoke upload template for each examination and care should be taken to download the correct spreadsheet for the required qualification, such as CE at 11+, CE at 13+, or CASE.

Once downloaded, open the spreadsheet and begin to populate it with candidate details.

The spreadsheet includes drop-down features for subject categories.

Please note, to view the drop-down please click into the cell and the options will appear, scroll to select the correct school for each candidate.

Once all candidates have been entered and checked please save the spreadsheet as a .CSV (comma delimited) file by selecting the drop-down 'file type' when saving, see screenshot below.

Please note: When saving the CASE 13+ Candidate Registration Upload Template spreadsheet as a .CSV (comma delimited) file, you might get a pop-up message as shown below. Please click 'OK' to continue to save your .CSV file.

Once a school is satisfied the spreadsheet is fully populated with all candidates entered correctly, please save the document as a .CSV (comma delimited) and upload through the new online forms.

To access these forms, log into your ISEB School Account and navigate to the Schools Hub - Examination & Qualification Registration Area and select the appropriate qualification.

Completing these forms will only take a few minutes. Once a registration has been submitted, a record of candidate registrations will appear in the school's dashboard on the ISEB School Account.
